Hornbeams

Hornbeams

The common hornbeam is a tree that loses its leaves in the autumn. It has light gray bark with lines going up and down. Sometimes its trunk is short and twisted, and gets bumpy as it gets older. The branches are brown-grey and slightly fuzzy, and the buds where the leaves grow are like beech buds but smaller and slightly bent. Grown-up trees can be really tall, up to 30 meters, and they can live for more than 300 years!
